What’s the best 120 brand for a beginner?

Post by Dan on Jan 28, 2018 18:33:39 GMT

For a man I'd suggest Misty 120s are quite good, and easily available.

For a woman I'd say forget the rest and go for Virginia Slims.

90% of the others you can see have been discontinued for over 30 years.

Post by vpmaster2004 on Jan 28, 2018 19:02:21 GMT

How about soft pack 120’s? I saw you can buy all the old good ones at kkare.com

Post by Dan on Feb 3, 2018 23:24:26 GMT

I found a few images on the K-Kare site, but they are not a reputable dealer and I would never buy any cigs on the basis of watermarked ads. I emailed K-Kare a million times over the years, and I never got a reply.

Post by vpmaster2004 on Feb 4, 2018 0:04:24 GMT

Where else would you suggest I go online to find a reputable site that sells 120’s?

Post by Dan on Feb 5, 2018 21:24:39 GMT

I dont know of any sites. This page is more for collectors, and those who remember these cigs.

Post by David120 on Feb 9, 2018 10:46:40 GMT

Some of those 120s are still available eg Cigaronne and Tourney. Most are gone unfortunately. Not good news if, like me, you only smoke 120s! Courtleigh Gold Band 120s were the sexiest looking cigarette ever. I loved them so much but wish they made a menthol version.

Post by Valery on Mar 9, 2018 17:45:06 GMT

Do you know brand of 120 cigarette sold in Canada?

Post by Dan on Mar 10, 2018 19:20:42 GMT

In Canada there may be Mores and perhaps Misty, but most of the brands still available on the list can only be imported from America.

I added 3 more rare brands to the list today, and a few more images. I think thats pretty much all of them now...

I can confirm More 120s (all-whites at least) are available in Quebec as this is what I smoke.

Post by Mandybgood on Apr 28, 2018 3:45:01 GMT

Would just like to point out that the eve 120s lights and the eve 120 Ultra Lights still are in production there just a more exclusive brand this is the brand my mother smokes and as of 15 minutes ago when I went to the gas station and bought her back a pack.(04-26-2018) however usually she picks a gas station/Smoke Store in the town she lives in and ask them to stock eve 120s and that's the place that she gets her cigarettes every day. Though they are the 120 length and similar to Virginia Slims and Misty. their flavor is unique. That's actually what brought me to your post was to look for a backup brands for her to tryout for times when her gas station/Smoke Store is closed or we're in a town that doesn't have them. Most gas stations and stores don't have a problem stocking them once they know she will buy them.so I would say still in production but limited availability (must be requested) or something like that.two that i know have stop them in the past are Huggy Bear Trading Post gas station(Low Bob's cigarettes) Econoasis gas station and smokes cigarette store all in Huntington Indiana as well as a handful around Nashville and Cookeville Tennessee. thanks

Post by Dan on Apr 28, 2018 15:39:59 GMT

Thanks for this info! I did a bit of research, and found this:

"In 1999, L&M sold its Chesterfield, L&M and Lark brands to Philip Morris Cos. for $300 million, leaving Eve the only premium brand produced by L&M."

So it seems Eve are still produced. This is great news! If you can send in a photo, I can add this to the thread, or if I send you $20, could you ship me out a pack? Image

Miss Diamond 120 are also sold around the Illinois region.

Hi new here and have a few questions regarding More 120’s.

In this list

www.doj.state.or.us/wp-content/uploads/ ... ectory.pdf

there seems to be different sizes for More’s, regular and slims. Is this true or is it just different names for the same product.

I.e:

More - 120's Soft
More - Gold 120's Soft
More - Gold Slim 120s Soft
More - Menthol 120's Soft
More - Menthol Silver Slim 120s Soft More - Menthol Slim 120s Soft
More - Silver Menthol 120's Soft
More - Slim 120s Soft

Also,

Where in the EU can one buy More’s in regular shops ?

Post by Dan on Apr 29, 2018 16:58:59 GMT

The new 'soft' label was added to the More range very recently, and as far as I know its just a new way of saying 'mild' or 'light', like the range was known to use before. The Gold and Silver Im not too sure about, but they have been going a while. They may be different to the regular, menthol, whites, and slim range. Perhaps viewers can write in and let us know.

Post by Dan on Jun 26, 2018 16:07:07 GMT

Added images for Mores Specials, Dunhuang 120s (could only find one low quality pic), and also Peter Stuyvesant Superlong (although I can only find the 100s image for these).

Post by Steve on Jul 14, 2018 10:37:11 GMT

Hey.
Great list and images. I never knew that so many brands of 120s had existed over the years.
I'm from the UK and have only ever been able to get Mores or Rothmans 120s over here. Rothmans were discontinued a while back, and Mores are in short supply since the overhaul of tobacco packaging to stop individuality.

I'm holidaying in New York next week and am hoping to be able to pick up some 120s to bring home - I can't imagine it's going to be an issue getting hold of some VS120s, and maybe some Mistys in NY is it?

Post by joker88 on Aug 6, 2018 22:24:24 GMT

Dan,

I live in southern California (LA-OC area) and I have been looking for Saratoga menthol 120s for a bit now. I tried several smoke shops in the area but nobody seems to have them in stock, do you have any suggestion for places to check?

Post by Dan on Aug 7, 2018 13:25:33 GMT

Perhaps only the top shops in the city will sell them. 120s seem to be available on the east coast easy enough, but not so much on the west coast. Not much online, but if you can find a local Costco, they will delivery to most places in CA, - except LA and OC.

G'day Dan,

I should come by this place more often than I do. Though I'm glad I came by when I did and laid eyes on this thread. I believe it's the most comprehensive list I've seen on the topic. Would you mind if I did something with it?

Nick

Just a quick question and feel free to be honest.
Is someone could ship a Eve 120 or Capri Magenta 120 to me in France ?
of course I can send money and pay a little bit more expensive to be more interesting Image
Thank you by advance

Update: Just added Jackpot 120s, and images for Viva and Cigaronne.

I too would be interested in Eves, shipped to the UK. Image

AusNick - To be honest, the links at the bottom of the page show the people who did all the hard work, and I just compiled a list from those web pages. It doesnt feel right for me to take any credit for their hard work, and most of the images came from those sites as well. Not sure what you would want to do with it, but cloning or ripping off the list might seem a bit pointless?

Post by AusNick on Aug 31, 2018 0:49:09 GMT

G'day Dan,

Part of the plan is to include all the links to origins, credit where it's due of course. But you did pull it all together into a single thread, so you deserve credit for that, all I want to do with it is preserve it for posterity, as I've done with other stuff, it'll give it a wider audience, and I'll throw in links to this forum too, so people can see where it all came from.

I might not have noticed this thread at all if it hadn't been for a link to an image here in the result for a web search for Brown Cigarette, so when I saw the URL, I knew I had to check it out, and mate, there are brands here that I had never heard of or I knew existed. I never realised there had been so many 120s on the market, or that so few remain.

And don't undervalue what you've done, you've put in some effort to bring together information that might have otherwise languished in obscurity. I for one appreciate that. And who knows, a change in policy somewhere could wipe it all out, I mean it's not as if people haven't been trying to erase smoking and it's history from public consciousness for some time.

Nick

Just noticed something about the Courtleigh print ad, it came from The Australian Women's Weekly, so they must have had a presence over here also.

(pop) Mind blown

I'm sure we had More 120s over here at some point, but I never actually saw them being smoked.

And speaking of More-like 120s, I'll have to look in my image archives, but I'm sure there was a brand called HK, or letters to that effect, I recall the packaging I saw being similar to that of More 120s, but my online searches don't turn up anything remotely useful.

Post by Dan on Aug 31, 2018 16:34:24 GMT
The Courtleigh print ad was for 100s, so still not sure if Australia got the 120s. Do keep a look out for any I missed. Image

Post by vpmaster2004 on May 24, 2019 7:27:51 GMT

I wonder where I can get more white 120's in SD. Aberdeen, SD has the more red 120's available. I'd also like to know where I can get Opal & tourney slims in SD, if available.

Post by steverino on Aug 19, 2019 23:14:06 GMT

Just an FYI, Eve 120s are available here (North Carolina) in most pharmacies and many convenience stores. Seneca 120s are available in convenience stores that are also what I call "full line cigarette stores". What I can't seem to find ANYWHERE are Saratogas.

Don't know if this is the right place to ask this but since there is a lot of discussion about 120s, I'll do it and hope for the best. Does anyone know for sure if Carlton 120s have been discontinued? Sheetz used to carry them all the time but no longer do, and I've looked at every pharmacy I pass. Thanks in advance.

Post by wt on Aug 22, 2019 21:00:47 GMT

Eve 120s are sold in Germany. Bought some in may when I was in Berlin.

Would love to get More’s but they are nowhere to be found in Europe

Post by vpmaster2004 on Aug 26, 2019 19:43:29 GMT

I thought that about maybe in the early 2000's I saw an ad in a magazine for Carlton ultra lights 120's and the same advertisement was also for a superslim version of Carlton 120's. I'm surprised that Salem hasn't had a 120mm length cigarette as part of the brand. I haven't seen any More brand cigarettes for a while, and I wish there was a Virginia slims 120's soft pack. I know a smoke shop in Champaign sold Malibu 120's, but it was different packaging and the cigarette itself looked similar to what Misty slims 120's looks like now. I haven't even seen any Eve or Saratoga brand cigarettes for a long time. I haven't seen any Tourney slims 120's for a long time either. Wish there were more brands that did 120mm length cigarettes.

Smoked Max 120’s (Blues) for many years. It was such a great tasting cigarette. I was so angry they were discontinued. Still bugs me to this day

Just bought a pack of the new Misty Slims 120's, and even though the look of the pack has changed, the cigarette itself hasn't changed. It went from 2 blue bands (for the original blue pack) and two green bands (for menthol) to a cigarette that just has 1 greyish silver band. When Virginia Slims 120's came out, the brand name was on the body itself. Now it's just on the filter like most cigarettes.

Hi, I thought I would mention a couple of things I found out recently regarding 120 brands. Apparently, Saratogas have been discontinued. I called Phillip Morris to ask about it and I couldn't get anyone to tell me anything about the current status of Saratogas. I have looked for them everywhere I go and this includes some large cigarette suppliers such as JR Cigar which used to carry them. At least in North and South Carolina, it seems as though there are none to be found.

Eves are readily available in North Carolina. Walgreens carries them and you will occasionally see them in convenience stores, though not many.

Mores have recently undergone a revamp of the packaging. I like the old package much better as the new one looks like an old Winston package. My understanding is that Mores are available in the normal red and green (menthol) packs and in gold and silver packs which are lights and lights menthol. I have seen the red and green on the shelf but never the gold and silver. The White Lights are gone but I'm thinking the gold and silver are the same cigarettes.

After a call to RJ Reynolds I found that Carlton 120s are still being made; however, all the places I used to see them on the shelf no longer carry them. JR Cigar still had them by the carton a few months ago but I think all of those stores have been converted to upscale cigar lounges now, so I think cigarettes are gone. Sheetz used to carry them all the time but they stopped, I guess because they weren't selling enough to justify shelf space. May not hurt to look there in other parts of the eastern seaboard, though.

What I do see a lot of on the shelf in convenience stores is Virginia Slims (the phrase "a lot of" is relative), Misty, Capri and Eve. I have seen Seneca in a few places.

I have never seen Miss Diamond, Cigaronne or Jackpot. I used to see Tourneys but they've been gone a long time in this area. Maybe about as long as Max, and we saw the last of those in 2010.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Interesting info - thanks.

If you see any rare (full) packs, do save them, as collectors like me could pay shipping costs to preserve them.

Jackpot and Cigaronne are Eastern European brands, so you wont see those.

There needs to be more 120mm brands. Shame that the majority of them have been discontinued.

As long as Virginia Slims and Capri keep the menthol 120s going, that's all that matters to me. I've heard a few store clerks say that the Virginia Slims menthol 120s are very popular. Which surprised me, you don't see people smoking them all that often. But apparently they are one of the more popular brands at some gas stations near me.

Capris are a little harder to find, but not super hard.

There's a [South Dakota] gas station right across from me that sells the entire line of both Virginia Slims and Misty cigarettes. There's a limited line of Virginia Slims, Misty, and Capri at the local Walmart on the opposite side of town. Limited line of Virginia Slims, and Misty at a grocery store called Kessler's just blocks away from me, and I think Ken's (that's on the opposite side of town) has a limited line, I believe of both Misty and Virginia Slims. I believe that most other gas stations in town have a limited line of Virginia Slims and Misty cigarettes.

I really like this board, Dan, thanks for making it. If you like Eves, and have any fond memories of the colorful flower bands from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, you might like these 2 pdf files I made of high quality scans from my collection. They are formatted to print in color on easy-peel clear labels (Avery 5663 or 15663) and they print in perfect actual size. When trimmed to wrap around the filter, they cover the vent holes of the Eves exactly. Just be careful with the Ultra Lights (Turquoise or Sapphire), because the nicotine goes up from 0.6 - 0.7 mg to roughly 2.0 mg just by covering the holes. Enjoy!
