Ark Royal
This brand is manufactured by Compania Industrial de Tabacos Monte-Paz SA, in Uraguay - otherwise known as Montepaz Company. The company was founded in 1880 by Julio Mailhos, which started the industrial production of tobacco in the country. Early brands included Cerrito, Coronado, Nevada and La Paz. Today the brand is marketed by its trademark owner Johannes Nieboer.
The tobacco in Uruguay is much richer than northern virginian varieties, and is mainly used as pipe tobacco. It is said that what began originally was the unsold pipe tobacco leaf, was recycled as cigarettes. Brands include Diamond Black, Parrot, Broadway, Bright, Madison and Ark Royal. Royal Oak manufacture began in 1989, and is a brand characterized by the sweet smell of vanilla and the flavor of pipe tobacco. The brand comes in several flavours, including Apple Mint (2002), Wildcard (2003) and Paradise Tea (2004). In December 2010, the brother brand "Captain Ark" started selling through Japan's import agent Japan-Trade Co., Ltd, with flavours including Wine Berry, Banana and Chocolate.
