Marlboro
The British producer Phillip Morris began in London in 1847 - as Philip Morris Esq., Tobacconist and Importer of Fine Seegars, on Bond Street in London. By 1885, their product brands include: Blues, Cambridge, Derby, Unis, and Marlborough - marketed as "the ladies' favourite". Philip Morris died in 1873, leaving his widow Margaret to take over the company. A New York store opens in 1902, and in 1925 they re-introduce the newly renamed "Marlboro" brand as "America's luxury cigarette" - which were mainly sold in hotels and resorts. The next year in 1926, a series of Marlboro poster ads show a feminine hand, and promote that the cigarette is for women. In 1930, the brand is marketed with a “Mild as May” campaign and slogan — in an effort to confront the old social stigmas, and the open attitudes of so-called new women. Also in 1930, An Ivory-tipped Marlboro is introduced, as a replacement for cigarette holders, so that women could smoke them without burning their lips.
By 1933, the regular brand was called "Marlboro English Blend", and came in a brown box. It took until 1955 before Philip Morris replaced its brown pack with the red and white package we know today. They brought in designer Frank Gianninoto, who had designed the now-iconic Campbell’s soup can, for the 1955 relaunch. Gianninoto produced the first flip top box, as well as the now-also-iconic red arrow branding. It has been speculated that the shape was inspired by the Great Egyptian Pyramid, just as RJ Reynolds had been using on their Camel brand since 1913. When combined with the Marlboro Man advertising, which emphasised the manliness of the brand and an association with the great outdoors, the result was soaring sales. Marlboro went from being a niche ladies’ brand to become the biggest in the world. The brand is now over 130 years old, and in 2035 the product will celebrate its 150th anniversary.
